Transcriptions for Oboe and Piano

Catherine Tanner-Williams (oboe)
Christopher Williams (piano)

Husband and wife duo Catherine and Christopher celebrate their 25th year of musical partnership with this disc of world premiere recordings of works which have been borrowed or transcribed for oboe and piano, including 3 pieces by Richard Strauss which were arranged specially for this CD.

Let the music take you along quiet forest paths, to magical castles and sparkling Viennese balls. Featuring a sonata by Mozart, and operatic works by Glinka and Richard Strauss, this disc showcases the oboe's lyrical and virtuosic sides in an intimate chamber music setting.

Catherine Tanner-Williams (oboe)Catherine and Christopher met at Cardiff University, where they both studied music as undergraduates. They began playing together almost from the moment they met. When Chris was soloist in Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, Catherine played the famous cor anglais solo in the slow movement, and he accompanied her for her final degree recital, her ARCM diploma, and her final postgraduate recital at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. In their 25 years as a couple, on and off stage, they have performed together across the UK.

While at university, Catherine gave the premiere of Anthony Power’s ...further in shadow... for oboe and orchestra, and won an award from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust to study with Douglas Boyd and Sophia McKenna. Her teachers also included David Cowley and Celia Craig. She has played principal oboe with many orchestras including Welsh Sinfonia, Bath Philharmonia, Chamber Orchestra of Wales, Concert
Orchestra de Cymru (with whom she recorded her own Oboe Concerto under Emmanuel Siffert), and Cardiff Bach Orchestra (with whom she performed Bach’s Concerto for Oboe d’amore), and also freelanced with Cardiff Sinfonietta and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

As well as her Oboe Concerto, other compositions include Darkness Fallingwith Birdsong which she premiered with Chris in Cheltenham Town Hall; Hidden Birds for trumpet and piano, premiered by Philippe Schartz and Christopher Williams in Columbus, Ohio at the International Trumpet Guild; and the piano piece Blue and WhiteDreaming of Sleep premiered in St David’s Hall, Cardiff by her husband.

When not busily scraping tiny pieces of arundo donax, Catherine also paints in oils and acrylics.
